Investigação com impacto

A Nova SBE produz investigação que impacta o meio académico, a sociedade e a economia. Este impacto é visível  nos resultados diretos obtidos nos projetos de investigação e na inclusão de artigos conjuntos nos mais prestigiadas revistas científicas , incluindo os rankings do Financial Times ou da Association of Business Schools, bem como outros artigos, livros, capítulos, estudos e outras contribuições. A Nova SBE também organiza a publicação dos seus próprios case studies.

Os seguintes casos foram selecionados para exemplificar o impacto que a investigação da Nova SBE tem em diversos campos. Estes casos demonstram as diferentes formas de contribuição a longo prazo que a nossa investigação tem: incentivando a um melhor desempenho das instituições financeiras e económicas, aumentando a eficácia das políticas públicas e partilhando conhecimento para quem o põe realmente em prática, nomeadamente as comunidades empresariais e de gestão.

Casos de estudo com impacto

Na área das finanças, a investigação realizada por Miguel A. Ferreira trouxe importantes contribuições sobre os efeitos da globalização financeira nas empresas, o que ajuda a compreender os efeitos dos investidores institucionais nas políticas das empresas e a organização da indústria financeira, assim como o papel dos fundos mutualistas nos mercados de capital internacionais. Esta investigação demonstrou que um maior controlo acionista por parte de instituições estrangeiras fomenta investimentos a longo prazo em capital tangível, intangível e humano. O controlo de instituições internacionais conduz também ao aumento significativo de outputs inovadores. Os resultados sugerem que as instituições internacionais exercem um papel disciplinar sobre membros que estão enraizados no mundo corporativo ao melhorar a qualidade das práticas de governo corporativo. Além disso, demonstram que os fundos provenientes de instituições bancárias geram piores resultados, devido a um problema de conflito de interesses: os gestores de fundos põem de parte os interesses de um mandatário (o fundo investidor) para beneficiar outro mandatário (a instituição bancária).

O trabalho de Miguel A. Ferreira foi mencionado por diversas entidades, tais como a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), a Financial Services Authority (FSA), o International Monetary Fund (IMF), a União Europeia (UE, e a European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA). As suas contribuições para a divulgação científica são também dignas de destaque. É Editor Associado do Journal of Banking and Finance, research fellow do European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI) e do Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), colaborando ainda com os Wharton Research Data Services na criação de bases de dados únicas para investigadores. Além disso, o seu trabalho foi mencionado em diversos órgãos de comunicação de referência, tais como The Economist, Financial Times, The New York Times, Washington Post, Fortune, e a revista Forbes. O envolvimento com praticantes e reguladores é comprovado, por um lado, pelos convites que recebeu para apresentar o seu trabalho em empresas internacionais de topo, agências e outras instituições (nomeadamente Blackrock, Banque de France e Norges Bank) e, por outro, por ter obtido o papel de membro independente na direção da principal agência de gestão de bens do país, na qual aplica o seu conhecimento para proteger os interesses dos investidores em fundos mutualistas.

A investigação de Miguel A. Ferreira tem tido o apoio de várias bolsas, incluindo uma Starting Grant do European Research Council (2012-2018) e tem sido publicada em três revistas de referência da área: Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Financial Studies e Journal of Finance. É também diretor académico do Nova SBE Finance Knowledge Center, que tem como objetivo fortalecer a cooperação entre a Nova SBE e este setor através de uma investigação e educação mais sólida em finanças.

Pedro Pita Barros teve contributos importantes na área da economia da saúde, nomeadamente no que diz respeito aos ecossistemas de cuidados de saúde públicos e privados. Os seus estudos trouxeram grandes avanços teóricos e práticos relativamente à identificação de determinantes de despesas de saúde, gestão de filas de espera e negociações dentro desta área, em Portugal e na UE.

O seu trabalho é publicado regularmente, sendo editor de revistas internacionais de renome. Os seus modelos e descobertas inovadoras são também amplamente divulgados em livros sobre economia da saúde, num blogue altamente respeitado (Momentos Económicos... e não só) e através da participação regular em debates públicos e conferências. Tem estado ativamente envolvido com corpos governativos e regulamentares. É membro do EC Expert Panel, que se dedica à procura de meios eficazes de investir em saúde (2013-2015), foi nomeado pelo Governo para o Conselho Nacional de Ética para as Ciências da Vida (2015- ) e eleito pelo Conselho de Reitores das Universidades Portuguesas para ser membro do Conselho Nacional de Saúde (2017- ).

O seu trabalho sobre filas de espera e tempos de espera levou Portugal a ser considerado um exemplo de boas práticas entre os países da OCDE. A discussão sobre os atrasos nos hospitais públicos chegou aos media, sendo regularmente citado em discussões públicas ou regulamentares. A sua colaboração com a Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian num relatório sobre uma nova visão do sistema de saúde incluiu uma reunião oficial com a Comissão de Saúde da Assembleia da República, sendo que vários dos pontos levantados foram incorporados em propostas legislativas e no próprio programa de Governo. Pedro Pita Barros chegou ao Top 5 dos melhores economistas portugueses, segundo o estudo Investigação Económica em Portugal: Pessoas e Instituições (CEFUP/NIPE).

As contribuições para a economia da natureza e dos recursos naturais têm sido concretizadas num grande projeto interdisciplinar patrocinado pela Iniciativa Gulbenkian Oceanos. Coordenado por Maria Antonieta Cunha e Sá, esta iniciativa estudou a avaliação económica dos serviços ambientais marinhos e costeiros em centros de estudo específicos da costa portuguesa (Peniche-Nazaré). O objetivo era compreender melhor a ligação entre gestão/uso de sistemas naturais e o seu impacto no bem-estar humano, a fim de desenvolver políticas de gestão sustentável dos ecossistemas.

Foi realizado um inquérito à perceção dos stakeholders sobre os serviços ambientais marinhos e costeiros, sendo estimada a vulnerabilidade do potencial dos habitats para produzir serviços ambientais na região. Os resultados foram partilhados num relatório, disponível online (Marine Renewable Energy In Portugal – If and When) e em dois workshops com os principais académicos deste campo. Foram ainda elaborados trabalhos científicos sobre o modelo bioeconómico Ibero-Atlântico de pesca da sardinha, o impacto económico da onda gigante da Nazaré e o valor potencial da exploração de energias renováveis offshore. Em 2017, nasceu o Nova SBE Center Environmental Economics Knowledge Center e foram estabelecidas parcerias com instituições como o Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA), o Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA), a Direção-Geral de Política do Mar (DGPM) e a Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (FCG).

Abordar desafios específicos dos países em vias de desenvolvimento tem sido uma das contribuições mais importantes da investigação realizada na Nova SBE, estando o Nova SBE NOVAFRICA Knowledge Center na base da investigação desenvolvida. Lançado em 2011, o Nova SBE NOVAFRICA Knowledge Center dedica-se ao desenvolvimento económico e financeiro de África, especialmente nos Países Africanos de Língua Oficial Portuguesa (PALOP).

Cátia Batista e Pedro Vicente têm estado a conceber e a executar mais de 20 projetos de campo, empregando testes de controlo randomizados e técnicas de experimentação empírica em Moçambique, Guiné-Bissau, Angola, Gâmbia e Quénia. Foi coberta uma grande variedade de tópicos dentro da economia para o desenvolvimento: inclusão financeira através do desenvolvimento comunitário que está relacionado com educação, educação cívica em período eleitoral, gestão de recursos naturais, incentivos aos trabalhadores na área da saúde, adoção de tecnologias na agricultura, despachos e migrações internacionais e a promoção do empreendedorismo sustentável, entre outros. Estes projetos atraíram investimento substancial por parte de instituições internacionais, tais como: International Initiative for Impact Evaluation (3ie), African Development Bank (AFD), Agricultural Technology Adoption Initiative (ATAI), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), International Growth Center (IGC), em Oxford, e LSE, Islamic Development Bank (IDB), IZA (Institute of Labor Economics), Profuturo Foundation (La Caixa/Telefonica) e United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Estes projetos envolveram mais de 50 alunos de mestrado e doutoramento, que obtiveram experiências valiosas em investigação durante o seu trabalho de campo. Em 2017, 12 alunos de doutoramento trabalharam diretamente em projetos dos Nova SBE NOVAFRICA Knowledge Center. O Nova SBE NOVAFRICA Knowledge Center organizou, pelo menos, uma conferência internacional por ano desde 2012, contando com a participação de alguns dos maiores investigadores deste campo internacionalmente (incluindo um Prémio Nobel, que foi membro do conselho consultivo do Nova SBE NOVAFRICA Knowledge Center) e ainda uma série de seminários com 88 oradores (2012-2017). O Nova SBE NOVAFRICA Knowledge Center tem publicado a sua investigação em revistas de renome, tais como Review of Economics and Statistics, Economic Journal e Journal of Development.

A área de liderança, coordenado por Miguel Pina e Cunha, começou por explorar o domínio em expansão que se debruça sobre fenómenos contraditórios, tais como o lado negativo da liderança positiva, os paradoxos em liderança de qualidade e as ambiguidades da ética intersubjetiva. Ao introduzir conceitos-chave (a dialética permanente e o improviso), o seu trabalho revelou a importância de aceitar e gerir a contradição. Desafiou vários conceitos que prevaleceram até então, tal como a conceptualização de organizações enquanto entidades que existem para lá da experiência individual, a ideia de que o otimismo nas organizações é linear e a crença de que os paradoxos são algo disfuncional.

As suas ideias e descobertas contribuíram não só com avanços teóricos, como foram amplamente divulgados em publicações académicas de renome, livros que se tornaram best-sellers, na formação de executivos, em parcerias com corporações e em discursos de oradores conhecidos. O trabalho de Miguel levou-o a ser premiado com uma cátedra, a colaborar em reformas de Estado, a assumir papéis não executivos em empresas privadas e a participar na direção editorial de revistas académicas. Adicionalmente, o seu contributo torna-se evidente na presença assídua nos media, pelo prémio de melhor professor de MBA e pela incorporação das suas ideias em programas da formação de executivos. Através do Nova SBE Leadership for Impact Center Knowledge Center tem sido partilhado conhecimento e ferramentas inovadoras tem tido um contributo indispensável na mudança de mentalidade de executivos seniores. Está atualmente a terminar três livros: Positive Organizational Behavior (Routledge), Social Theory for Management (Routledge), e Organizational Resilience (Elgar).
