PHD in Economics and Finance

Research Areas

The Nova SBE PhD program is designed to train future researchers in one of our following key-areas of Economics:

  • Behavioral Economics
  • Development Economics
  • Environmental Economics
  • Finance
  • Health Economics
  • Industrial Organization
  • Labor Economics and the Economics of Education
  • Macroeconomics
  • Public & Political Economy

The Behavioral Economics area uses insights from psychology to better understand human behavior and its implications for Economic decision-making and markets. It relaxes some of the assumptions of traditional neoclassical Economics to provide more realistic theories of behavior and provides an overview of the evidence of human bias in judgment and decision-making.

Environmental Economics is concerned with the appropriate design of regulatory interventions when free markets do not deliver efficient outcomes due to market failures, thus taking into account how incentives affect households', businesses' and institutions' behavior. On the other hand, Natural Resource Economics focuses on how to sustainably produce, allocate, and manage natural resources (non-renewable and renewable), in both cases, across space and over time.

Industrial Organization considers the strategic behavior of firms, how markets work, and their institutional setting. As a subfield of Microeconomics, it is based on consumer and firm theories, information economics, and game theory. Its most important applications are in the areas of innovation, regulatory, and competition policy in traditional markets as much as those revolutionized by the digital economy.

Macroeconomics studies the overall changes in the economy. Some essential questions in Macroeconomics include the following: "How can a country become rich? What is the impact of government expenditures on the economy? Does it matter if government expenditures are financed through taxes or inflation? How to explain fluctuations in financial markets?" There are many other questions about innovation, international trade, asset pricing, environment, fiscal policy, and monetary policy. The common characteristic is studying the aggregate movements in the economy.

Public Economics concerns government intervention in the economy regarding taxation and transfers, and the provision of public goods and public services. It also studies how these policies may impact individuals' choices regarding the labor market, consumption, and family decisions and, finally, how they affect the well-being and the inclusiveness of society regarding poverty and inequality and discrimination. Political Economy is about the interaction of different societal institutions (e.g., voting rules and how they translate into government and parliament composition, the role of the media) that shape how collective decision making is delegated in politicians, their quality, and incentives, and the policies they implement.
