Research | 14 April 2020 Preliminary results of survey on distance learning in the pandemic context

Most teachers surveyed say that 23% of their students do not have a computer with Internet access at home. There is variability in respondents' responses between public and private schools and even among public schools and in early education cycles. For example, in the public primary education the average percentage of students without a computer with Internet access is 31%, while in private schools this figure drops to 10%.

With regard to distance learning strategies, the most adopted (85%) is the sending of complementary materials, such as individual worksheets and group works. Almost 3/4 of the respondents claim to clarify doubts at a distance, only 30% teach by videoconference and 12% provide videos recorded by themselves. Between private and public schools the biggest differences are observed in the use of classes by videoconference or video recording. 63% of private school teachers say they teach classes by videoconference and 27% provide videos recorded by themselves, this figure drops to 22% and 8%, respectively, in public school teachers.

In the assessment elements collected, the vast majority of respondents (71%), refer to resorting to the assessment of homework sent to students. Only 1 in 4 teachers claims to have used or plans to use tests as a means of assessment. About 19% of teachers say they are not collecting any elements of assessment. Both in public and private schools, teachers predominantly resort to homework as an assessment tool. In private schools, 33% of teachers collect information about participation in online classes, and 39% record students' attendance. These figures fall in public schools to 9% and 14%, respectively.

About 77% of the surveyed teachers say they are not yet using the distance learning resources provided by the Ministry of Education.
